The flavor of the towns and streets of Tuscany. The vespa, parked along the side, is still a mode of transportation in many towns and village’s in Italy. Vespa is a project inspired by a photograph in Sienna, Italy along with a look at a particular piece of hickory. I loved the nature of the heartwood and sapwood in such a grain direction. I planted the photo in the middle as it was framed naturally by the lighter shade of hickory instead of the dark tunnel in the photograph.
It was hand painted and left in a matte sheen because it seems to add realism to the carving for me. A couple of coats of shellac along the exposed hickory is all I used to finish it off.
